Most Influential Computer/Games Console « Thread Started on May 18, 2003, 4:03am »
There have been countless computers and games consoles released over the years, each offering something unique, but only a few have managed to have a major impact on the industry far beyond just being another format.
What do you think has had the most influence and why? I won't put my thoughts here yet, but once we've had a few more postings, I'll put my comments on why I've voted the way I have.
The most influential doesn't have to be the most impressive technically, just the one you think has left the strongest legacy for gaming's future.

Its the most popular platform, not many houses don't have one and PC games range from Action to shoot 'em up, it has everything you want for PC games and you cannot go into a game shop and not find a PC title you don't like!

Being popular and having a large range of software doesn't really mean it has had an influence on the industry.
For me it has to be the Amiga - a lot of games developers, programmers, artists, and musicians all started out on the Amiga. Team 17 started off with the Amiga, and Worms was originally written in Blitz Basic for the Amiga before it reached global success!
At the same time, most major musicians nowadays cut their teeth on the Amiga, as have a lot of artists. Tobias Richter, who has worked on the new Batman game and both Rogue Squadron games, started off doing artwork and animation on the Amiga.
If it wasn't for the Amiga, we wouldn't have had classics like Sensible Soccer and far too many other games to mention!
It's the same for application software - the Amiga has had some of the best multimedia authoring packages, and art software (including Lightwave that was used for Babylon 5, X-Files, Star Trek, Dan Dare, and loads more), and so much more.
Also, it was the first system to offer an integrated CD drive as standard, offer graphics that were years ahead of its time, and so many other truly innovative features...

I have to go with the PC... For the sole reason that it is so versatile. They may be expensive compared to consoles, but the range roles they can undertaker is much greater. People normally buy a PC for the internet, or the applications, and only very rarely for sole games use.
The PC has, and still is having the biggest impace on the gaming community. reasons below, heh - I've listed them, caus one sentence became hard to read...
It can be upgraded for newer gamesHas a much wider range of titlesMany different types of controllers can be used (keyboard, mouse, joystick, pads, wheels, etc)The games are much more "customiseable"Multi-player over the internetAnd there are some more... somewhere.. heh

Welcome to the board - pity you joined when it seems as it it's dying on here!
Our other forum - http://autoassembly.proboards7.com - is a lot more active. It's only been online since August this year, and has had over 8,100 posts, and has almost as many members as this one.
Although it's mainly a Transformers board, there's loads of sci-fi, gaming, and a health off-topic area, and the most popular thread on the board is a WWE one with about 250 posts!!
Feel free to come over and join us!
With the modem, they're getting harder to find with old Amiga kit, but there are still a few dealers out there. Might be worth contacting Eyetech.
