How does everyone feel about the education system and how it treats disabled people?
Do you think that schools should be integrated or should disabled kids be sent to "special" schools?
I was sent to a disabled school and I thought that the education I received was awful.

My sister went to a special school for children with learning difficulites, she got 1:1 teaching and she got on wonderfully. She was only there for a year or two, dont know if this made any difference though .

Physical disabilities or mental disabilities?
I had to go through 5 schools with ADHD, Aspergers and Dyspraxia (Only really have Aspergers now) and can say it was utter hell.
First off I was *really* hyperactive as a kid, so much so I was chucked out of my first school at 7... though that was also because I was overly intelligent (high functioning aspergeric, me), and kept getting held back.
2nd school advertised itself as a special school for kids with ADHD and whatever, which was ok at first... But the teachers were never into listening... But they kept taking on tons more kids and ended up over-full, so a couple of years later they started to rid themselves of the more awkward students (ie. me)
3rd... **** . They wanted me there purely because they got a 4 grand special needs grant, which they spent on upgrading their facilities to become a sports college, kept me there as long as they needed to to get the money, before all the teachers starting "losing" my work, treated me like **** so I got more ****ed off, kept getting in fights and **** , and they expelled me.
4th.. blah. I got on well the first term, then the next one I was in a new class, all of us were pretty hyper, teachers were ****** and school was a vauge competition to see how many lessons a day we could get thrown out of. Arf.
Then they put me in another new class with a great tutor, got on well with the other guys and all was good until my tutor had to leave (family responsibilities) and was replaced by the deputy head who was a ****... after a few months he drove me absolutely insane and I beat the crap out of him... (he started it) he ended up with a concussion and 2 other teachers had to drag me off him because I was trying to choke him to death...
Later on the other teachers said seeing him turn puce was highly amusing, and they were tempted to leave me there (They don't like him either )
5th was basically me being privately tutored, and went well, along with part time college courses.
That was long... Oh well. At my 4th school though I was always being told by the deputy head that "You're aspergic so you'll have difficulty having relationships, you won't get decent jobs, or have a good social life because you can't make friends..."
etc.. and that happened every day. Yey.
Oh well, now I'm a trainee web-designer, had numerous relationships and have dozens of friends (male and female) so ner.

Sorry to read about your school live and how you were thrown out of your schools, I glad you have a good future and have proved your teachers wrong on that score. I'm dyslexic with dyspraxia, i never got into trouble at school, tended not to have many friends thought it was better by myself. The school was quite supportive as it was really unheard of in my day at school its only come to light in the last 10 years or so. Now in the schools there is alot more support for the students with dyslexia. I have had a lot of support now that im a training nurse with the university things are starting to fall into place alot easier than i was at school. Staff on the wards are very understanding towards me when i cant always remember things first time or getting things mixed up, the worst things i experience with dyslexia is the panick attacks if i think im doing something wrong.

it worries me a bit as nursing is my profession or will be next year, my numbers and letters get reversed by accident sometimes it could cost somebody thier life if i ever got it wrong, and never noticed until it was too lat to do anything about.

I guess thats true... Most of the people I've known with dyslexia have said that if they take their time whilst writing theres not usually a problem.

I've suspected that I've had dyslexia for years, but it's only recently been detected.
I don't know how the schools missed it. Could anyone give me any tips on how to deal with it?

i think you are cher, your words come out reversed sometimes. If you with a university ask for the test to see if you are. they pay all fees the universities have money especially for this reason. good luck. sue

Why dont disabled peole get the same treatment as someone without a disability?
